The clandestine press became very successful during Resistance period. From a mere handful in 1940, the number of titles grew to five hundred by 1944. Printing prohibited papers was a dangerous business and needed a vast network not only for distribution but also to get hold of presses, paper and printers willing to risk their lives for the cause.
