Text and images harmoniously integrated

Poliphile’s Dream, an allegorical love story attributed to the Dominican Francesco Colonna, was first printed in 1499 by Aldus Manutius. It was very successful in Italy and abroad.  Kerver’s Paris edition may have been inspired by that produced 50 years earlier by Aldus Manutius, but it is more than a simple re-edition or copy. The work is richly illustrated by a great 16th-century artist, who has created an original interpretation, in a different spirit from that of the Italian model. This is a perfect example of harmony of graphic style between text and images.
